Freddy Road
Freddy Road is a street in East Billerica in Whipple Acres, about 1,150 feet long. It leaves the western end of the 1963 part of Harjean Road, near the Boston and Maine Railroad, and runs northeast to Whipple Road.
It was laid out on the "Definitive Plan, Subdivision Whipple Acres," whose title block gives the "Street Names Harjean & Freddy." The owner was Jeanne G. Shotz, and the plan was drawn by John F. Mahoney & Associates, civil engineers and land surveyors, of Danvers. It is dated May 23, 1963, the Planning Board approved it on June 3, 1963, and it was recorded on June 25, 1963 in three sheets (Plan Book 98, Plan 119). The third sheet shows Freddy Road, 50 feet wide, curving from Harjean Road to Whipple Road between lots 39 to 44 and 45 to 55, most of about 15,000 to 17,800 square feet, with a 20-foot right of way along the east side. The land had been zoned industrial: at the annual town meeting of 1962 the town voted unanimously to rezone the Shotz land on Whipple Road and Brown Street to a village residence district. The Planning Board counted Whipple Acres in East Billerica among the largest subdivisions it approved in 1963. The assessors date the houses on Freddy Road to 1968 and 1969.
The name is older than the street. In August 1947 John Thomas Brown, surveyor, of North Billerica drew "Shawsheen River Pines, Unit No. 2" for Harry and Jeanne Shotz (Plan Book 71, Plan 40). It showed a Freddy Road, 40 feet wide, running from Salem Road, now George Brown Street, to Coolidge Street between Marilyn Road and a short way named Hershon Row near the railroad. That Freddy Road was never built: on the 1963 plan its ground is still Shotz land with no street, and the name went to the new street at the other end of the tract. Like Donald, Jordan, Marilyn and Norman on the Shotz plans, Freddy is a given name; whose it was is not recorded, and the origin was not found.
Freddy Road was number 32 on the list of 62 streets offered under Article 40 at the annual town meeting of March 1972, and the record of the meeting lists it among "the following streets" that "were accepted."
